MACH1 Coastal Adventures: Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the fleet! Before you captain your own high-performance mini powerboat through the Wilmington waterways, here is everything you need to know to ensure a fast, fun, and safe adventure.

🗓️ Booking, Logistics & Policies

Do I need prior boating experience to drive?

Not at all. While our mini powerboats are high-performance and agile, they are incredibly intuitive to drive. Before we hit the water, our expert guides will take you through a comprehensive safety briefing and hands-on orientation. You’ll be a confident captain in no time.

How does the tour actually work?

We operate as a guided convoy. Your guide leads the pack in a pace boat, navigating the best routes and pointing out local wildlife and coastal highlights. You and your crew follow directly behind in your own individual powerboats, giving you the freedom to carve through the wake while staying safely on course.

Where do your tours depart from?

We operate out of Carolina Beach Boatyard & Marina --unless other plans have been arranged for your custom tour. Once your booking is confirmed, we will send you a pinpoint drop location, parking instructions, and specific dock numbers in your confirmation email.

How early should I arrive?

Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled launch time. This ensures a stress-free check-in, time to load your gear, and allows everyone to attend the mandatory safety and driving orientation. Because we run on a strict schedule, late arrivals that miss the safety briefing cannot be accommodated and will not be refunded.

What is your cancellation and weather policy?
  • Weather: Safety is our absolute top priority. If the Captain/Guide determines that high winds, heavy rain, or lightning make conditions unsafe, we will notify you as early as possible to reschedule your tour or issue a full 100% refund. (We do still ride in light, passing rain—the boats are built for it!).
  • Guest Cancellations: For standard bookings, we require 48 hours' notice for a full refund or rescheduling. Cancellations made within 48 hours of your launch time are non-refundable.

⚓ On Board Rules & Preparation

What are the age and legal requirements to drive or ride?
  • To Drive: You must be at least 25 years old with a valid photo ID.
  • To Ride: Passengers must be at least 6 years old.
  • Boating License: If you were born on or after January 1, 1988, North Carolina law requires boat operators to complete a NASBLA-approved boating safety course, or take our quick, temporary pre-rental safety check onsite before launching.
Can we switch drivers during the tour?

Yes, absolutely! As long as both participants are 25+ and completed the pre-ride safety briefing, your guide will designate a safe, calm zone during the tour where you can safely swap seats and take turns at the helm.

What should I wear and bring?

Expect to get a little wet! The ride is fast, close to the water, and can get breezy.

  • Wear: Swimwear or quick-dry athletic apparel, and weather-appropriate layers.
  • Footwear: Secure footwear is required (water shoes, sandals with straps, or sneakers). Please, no loose flip-flops, high heels, or boots that could scuff the boat.
  • Bring: Your ID, a towel for afterward, polarized sunglasses (a strap/retainer is highly recommended!), and sunscreen (please apply before boarding).
Can we bring food, alcohol, or valuables?
  • Snacks & Drinks: You are welcome to bring small snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. However, to keep everyone safe, no glass bottles or containers are allowed on board. Stick to cans, plastic, or stainless steel.
  • Valuables: We recommend leaving major valuables locked in your vehicle. Each boat features a small, dry storage compartment for essentials like your phone and car keys, but MACH1 is not responsible for any water damage to personal electronics.
  • Smoking/Vaping: For the safety of our fleet and guests, MACH1 is strictly a smoke-free and vape-free experience.

🛡️ Safety, Health & Accessibility

Are your captains certified?

Yes. MACH1 has USCG licensed Captains and guides experienced in maritime safety, navigation, and local waterway knowledge.

What type of boat will we be driving?

You'll be captaining a custom, high-performance mini powerboat designed to balance speed, stability, and comfort. Built to slice through coastal chop smoothly, it provides an exhilarating, agile, yet incredibly secure ride.

Is there a restroom on board the boats?

There are no restrooms on board our individual mini powerboats. We strongly recommend using the land-based facilities at the marina immediately before our safety briefing.

What are the physical restrictions and weight limits?

Because these are rugged, high-performance watercraft navigating active wakes, the ride can be bumpy. For safety reasons, our tours are not recommended for guests who are pregnant, or those with severe back, neck, or cardiac conditions. The maximum combined weight limit per boat is 450 lbs.

What is your policy on life jackets?

In compliance with US Coast Guard regulations, life jackets are provided for all guests. All children under the age of 13 must wear an approved life jacket at all times while the vessel is underway. We provide comfortable, properly fitted jackets for all sizes, from infants to adults.

⚠️ Zero Tolerance Policy: To ensure the safety of everyone in the convoy, the consumption of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited before and during the tour. Drivers suspected of being under the influence will be barred from riding immediately without a refund.

👥 Group Bookings & Private Charters

Do you offer private group tours or corporate events?

Yes! Whether you’re planning a corporate team-building event, a bachelor/bachelorette party, or a large family reunion, MACH1 is built for crowds that crave speed. We can reserve the entire fleet exclusively for your group, allowing you to customize the pace and vibe of your tour.

How many people can you accommodate at once?

Because our fleet consists of two-passenger mini powerboats, we can get a massive convoy out on the water simultaneously. For groups larger than our maximum single-launch capacity, we easily arrange back-to-back staggered tours combined with a shoreside hangout.

Can we customize a private charter itinerary?

Absolutely. With a full-fleet private charter, you dictate the mission. Want to focus entirely on a fast, high-performance run through the channels? Prefer to throttle back for an eco-focused dolphin-watching cruise, or plan a dedicated stop to scout a remote barrier island for shark teeth? Our guides will tailor the route to your group's exact style.

How do we book a large group, and what is the policy?
  • Advance Notice: Private charters and groups requiring more than 3 boats should be booked at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance to guarantee fleet availability.
  • Payment & Deposits: Large group bookings require a 50% deposit at the time of booking, with the remaining balance due 7 days prior to launch.
  • Cancellation Policy: Group bookings and private charters have an extended 7-day cancellation window for a full refund.
